About FIFA 15 TV Commercial, 'The Play' Featuring Lionel Messi

Watch the action take play on the field and in your living room. Buy FIFA 15, in stores September 23rd, 2014.

iSpot Review — November 7, 2014

Sit and play as Lionel Messi with FIFA 15 pumping out of your TV, but fasten down the futon, 'cause it's going to get rowdy in your room.

That's the point EA Sports wants to convey in this ad. It's a tall order to attempt to convey that message convincingly. The team behind FIFA 15 nails it.

Part of the winning ways stem from the unique behind-the-glass perspective of the live actor. It is the only way we see him for much of the first part of the commercial. Instead, we mostly watch the gameplay action and FIFA 15's vibrant visuals, only to be slowly introduced to the live person playing the game.

The final rattling home and slow-mow living room sequence is a well-trod creative technique; but it works because of the unique approach of the initial action. We believe what comes next, because we were bought in from the start.

Many spots try to balance the use of gameplay and live action living room settings to achieve this immersive effect, but not many have done so as well.
