Public historian Christy S. Coleman shares how after the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, many formerly enslaved people who were left without last names chose "Lincoln" as a surname in honor of the President. This phenomenon is reflected in Charleen Lincoln, the great-granddaughter of an individual freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. Professional genealogist Nicka Sewell-Smith helps Charleen learn more about her family history by introducing her to the Ancestry collection "Interviews with Formerly Enslaved People," which contains an interview with her great-grandfather Amos Lincoln.
