Nina Kikel-Coury lived the first 14 years of her life as a completely normal child, then started fainting. After many medical tests, she was diagnosed with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS). It means that her body cannot regulate its own temperature, but it also meant that she had found her passion in medical research. As a graduate student at Notre Dame, she discovered a new kind of cell in the heart that's pertinent to her syndrome and could help treat people like her in the future.
