With its commercial titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispot.tv\/ad\/7zEe\/mcdonalds-our-food-your-questions\">Our Food. Your Questions.<\/a>,\u201d the chain is opening itself up to the public asking for questions regarding the contents in its food, risking potential backlash.<\/p>\n<div style=\"position:relative;width:100%;padding-top:56.25%;padding-bottom:40px;\"><iframe style=\"position:absolute;top:0;right:0;left:0;bottom:0;width:100%;height:100%;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ispot.tv\/share\/7zEe\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>In the spot, people approach a McDonald\u2019s sign and ask questions that include \u201cDoes McDonald\u2019s sell real food?\u201d \u201cWhat\u2019s really in your beef?\u201d and \u201cPink slime, what\u2019s up with that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The commercial first aired Oct. 13 on E! Network and has aired more than 830 times nationally. Four days after its debut, the McDonald\u2019s TV ad saw a spike in digital social Interaction. Out of the 26 spots the chain is currently airing, \u201cOur Food. Your Questions.\u201d is still generating the most online activity.<\/p>\n<p>The McDonald\u2019s commercial maintains an iSpot Effectiveness Rating of 9 and peaked to 9.4 during its first week, while the average effectiveness rating for commercials in the fast-food category is 5.6. iSpot has a tool called an Ad Effectiveness Rating, a score that measure how well a commercial did in comparison to other commercials in the same category. The score comes from dividing the volume of digital activity by the estimated TV spend as compared to all other campaigns on national TV.<\/p>\n<p>As of Oct. 28, the commercial has had 113,849 online views on YouTube and iSpot, but it has gone viral since the controversy. Media outlets such as <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Business\/mcdonalds-plans-give-customers-happier-meal\/story?id=26157149\">ABC<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/3501921\/mcdonalds-transparency-campaign\/\">Time<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/adage.com\/article\/cmo-strategy\/mcdonald-s-launches-food-transparency-campaign\/295395\/\">Advertising Age<\/a> have discussed the campaign and the efforts being made in an attempt to clean up the chain\u2019s image. Despite the attempt at transparency, many Tweeters aren\u2019t buying the message. Most Tweets include the same question: where are the answers?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hub-cdn.ispot.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/18170640\/McDons1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hub-cdn.ispot.tv\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/18170640\/McDons1.jpg\" alt=\"McDons1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-776\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s has made an effort to answer certain questions with the help of former \u201cMythBusters\u201d co-host Grant Imahara, who McDonald\u2019s hired to talk about the food content through a series of behind-the-scenes webisodes. In one webisode, he takes consumers on a journey to one of McDonald\u2019s beef suppliers to answer the question of whether or not the chain uses real beef in its burgers. McDonald\u2019s is answering questions through social media as a part of a follow-up response.<\/p>\n<p>Within the fast-food industry, the spot ranks in fourth place for most online activity for commercials that have aired since Oct. 13. During the week of Oct. 28, the spot that ranked one place above it belongs to its competitor, Burger King. The equally controversial commercial iSpot titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispot.tv\/ad\/7zRm\/burger-king-street-interview\">Street Interview<\/a>\u201d began airing nationally one day prior to the release of the \u201cOur Food. Although Burger King did not post this particular commercial on its YouTube channel, the commercial on iSpot generated 160,766 views from embeds and shares, which have been featured on websites for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/billy-eichner-slams-burger-king-copy-commerical-2014-10\">Business Insider<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/adfreak\/billy-eichner-rips-burger-king-stealing-his-act-and-mcdonalds-piles-160734\">Adweek<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etonline.com\/news\/152432_billy_eichner_accuses_burger_king_of_stealing_his_shtick\/\">Entertainment Online<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/defamer.gawker.com\/billy-eichner-puts-burger-king-on-blast-for-ripping-off-1645616574\">Gawker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although it\u2019s no surprise that controversy leads to a boost in social digital engagement, buzz and social engagement surrounding \u201cOur Food. Your Questions\u201d is exactly what McDonald\u2019s hoped to accomplish.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s 24\/7 news cycle, people are looking for faster, more straightforward responses to their questions about our food,\u201d said Ben Stringfellow, vice president of communications for McDonald\u2019s USA. \u201cWe have great information to share and we\u2019re looking forward to engaging in two-way conversations with as many people as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McDonald\u2019s has opened communication through a campaign in which the chain appears willing to divulge information to skeptics. However, some of its answers are leading to more questions \u2013 even with a celebrity MythBuster providing the answers. Is McDonald\u2019s telling the truth by leaving nothing out or is there more to the story? Is McDonald\u2019s being 100 percent honest in the same manner it claims its beef to be 100 percent natural?
